Ancestry.com  Claims to be the largest family history site online with over 4 billion names in worldwide historical records, family tree services and genealogy.

  Lots of stuff from the Ancestry UK site, collected together to give Canadian records.

Cyndi's List   A large categorized and cross-referenced directory of sites useful for genealogical research, with hundreds of thousands of links - and they're free.  I can remember when this was just one very short page!

Ellis Island Site  A chance to get some details on immigrant arrivals in the US.

Genes Reunited  Initial contacts via this site may give you no more than an ancestor with the same name, and the site is not the easiest to find your way around.  However we have made some very helpful contacts.

Mormons  First stop always.  Billions of free family tree, family history, ancestry, genealogy and census records.

My Trees  Search every name in your family tree all at once, plus build your family tree online free.

OneGreatFamily  Great site in that it constantly crossmatches information you have loaded with that of others. Seems to have a greater predominance of American info at this stage though.

Roots Web  Claims to be the internet's oldest and largest free genealogical resource with searchable databases.  Information I loaded here seven or eight years ago is still coming back to haunt me. 

United States Ancestors  A mixed assortment of records - Census, marriage etc, some with a specific State focus.

World Vital Records  You will pay to get access to detail, but the geo mapping feature of their website is fascinating.  This unique feature places information relevant to your searches on dynamically generated maps. For example, when you search for a surname, a map is created showing you the location of that individual's death, as well as the deaths of other individuals in the local area. On the map you can see nearby towns, roads, relevant information (like nearby cemeteries) and even historical timeline data. No one else offers this feature!
