 .........or was he John Sutton?

A John Sutton left London on board the ship Orleana.  He had an intermediate cabin, and the goods travelling with him consisted of :  42 boxes glass (?), 26 crates, 4 casks earthenware, 11 pieces luggage and 3 doz shovels.  It would seem he planned to provide supplies for miners when he arrived in South Australia on 23 Jan 1839.

He appears two years later in the 1841 Census - District of Kensington Village in South Australia.  The record shows:
John Sutton - under 50
Jemima Sutton - under 35   - no children

The next appearance is 6 Feb 1842 at Trinity Church Adelaide.  A John Sutton, bachelor of Kensington, married Jemima Finch, widow of Kensington.

So far we have found no birth record of their first child, but when Jemima Ann was born in 1846, her father was still known as John SUTTON.  By the time Helen Laura was born in Aug 1855 his surname (and hers) was STONE.

Somewhere along the line he decided to surround his name with two additional names.  Life was harsh in South Australia and there seems to have been more important things than keeping paperwork.

Little else is known of his activities until the time of his death.  At that time he was living with his son, John George Sutton Stone, in Murtoa, Victoria.  His death certificate gives his name as George John Sutton STONE.  This information was given by his son, who stated that his father was born in Canterbury, Kent, England.

So who was he?  What was his family history?  Was he originally George Stone, who decided to become John Sutton when he came out to Australia, then went back to his original name (with the other name slotted in the middle).  Or was he John Sutton who decided to become George Stone?  One story suggests that he did not want to go back to England, and decided he would be harder to find if he had a different name.

If you have encountered George John Sutton Stone in your research, we would love to hear from you via info@GeneFrog.com
